Simple Ways to Enrich Your Cat’s Life
Is your cat happy? Sometimes it’s easy to tell — they may purr and rub up against you, for instance, signaling that they’re content. But cats are notoriously hard to read, too. And for some cat owners, making sure their feline friend is living a happy, full, and enriching life is important.
If you know how to do it, and if you can tell that they’re actually happy, that is.
So, what can you do to make sure your cat is content? Are there things you can do to increase and enhance your cat’s quality of life? Should you just get down on all fours and purr at them, hoping they’ll reciprocate? You can try that, but we certainly can’t guarantee any results.
Here are some things you can try to enhance your cat’s quality of life — no purring required!
Socializing
You like to socialize. Your cat might like to socialize as well! While cats may be and seem like solitary creatures, a little facetime with other cats may help them live a happier and healthier life. Socializing, in this sense, basically means that you’re exposing your cat to others — other cats, people, places, etc. Socialization may help smooth out behavioral issues.
It’s generally a good idea to socialize your cat as soon as possible. Kittens are very social, and if possible, it may be advisable to socialize your cat while they’re still very small or young. That’s not to say older cats can’t be socialized, but it may be a bit more of a process. Just make sure your cat isn’t aggressive, and has all of its necessary immunizations before making the attempt.
Toys
You may love your PlayStation 5. Cats like toys, too!
There are a ton of different cat toys on the market, ranging from solo toys to scratch posts. Toys can help keep your cat active and stimulate its mind. It’s similar to how toys can give small children an outlet for burning off energy and get their minds fired up. While not all toys are going to be a good fit for each cat, it can be a good idea to experiment with different toys to see what they like. A scratch post is also a good idea since scratching is a perfectly natural behavior for them.
Field Trips
If you have an indoor cat, it may seem crazy to want to take your cat outside. It’s dangerous out there after all. But if you do it safely and correctly, a field trip outside may be a true shock to your cat’s system. In a good way.
Check out harnesses/leashes for your cat, carriers or outdoor cat enclosures, or even strollers. These are all available on the market, and while your cat may hate one or all of them, it may be worth a shot to get your cat outside and change things up a bit.
Playtime!
It may seem deceptively simple, but be sure you’re taking time to play or spend time with your cat every day. You may be tired and busy, but your cat needs attention too. Even if you’re too wiped to talk to your cat, pet them, and play around a bit, they will appreciate it.
With that in mind, get down on the ground! Throw your cat’s toy so they can chase it. Do whatever your cat likes in terms of playing around. Playtime is important, and your cat isn’t a Peloton bike — you can’t put it in a corner and ignore it.
Make the effort to make your cat’s life as fun and enriching as possible.
